Brotato is a cartoon, rogue-like, top-down shooter developed and published by Blobfish and Seaven Studio. This 2023 fast-paced action game is a rootin-tootin, shootin extravaganza that is not for the faint of heart. You play as a potato, hence the titular game title, and wield up to 6 weapons in a classic hordes-style battle showdown. The gameplay loop and replay-ability is addictive while always making players try out different things to ensure a chaotic playthrough, much like other popular games like Vampire Survivor, Binding of Isaac, or Hades.
Though this game has a basic enough premise, running around killing aliens while trying not to get killed, Brotato has a bit of a learning curve if you want to be the ultimate potato warrior. These will be your best guide that will help you stay alive in Brotato.
Put the Damn in Damage
Damage works by using the Base Weapon Damage, adding the range or melee damage times the scaling percent of the weapon. We take that number and multiply that by the percent damage rounded up. It’s a lot of mathematical jargon but trust me, it’s way more useful to know what damage you’re throwing. Understanding your damage output is crucial in a game like this so take time to know what weapon is best suited for your gameplay and character. Different weapons have different crit chances while depending on the item’s rarity and such. For example, the Knife has an increasing rate when it comes to crit damage, but the Spear has a base damage that increases more. Same thing goes for the Laser and the Pistol, even though both are classified as guns, they both differ in base damage, attack speed and pierce damage. For each character you build, you must adapt your weapons suitable to your build to increase more damage output. After each wave, check your weapons for base damage and remove any item that is not suitable for your gameplay. Always focus on damage.
Weapon’s Passive Bonus
It will be much easier in the long run if you revolve your play depending on the weapon class of the items you get as they have attributes that can help you. Picking up the best weapon each wave is not ideal when you’re trying to maximize your damage. If given the chance, base your weapon selection on cohesiveness and overall relationship with your other weapons and your stats to magnify your output and deal the most damage you’re character is churning out. As I’ve said, even though one weapon is much better than the other ones you have in your arsenal, if it doesn’t blend well to your overall output, best to throw it out if given the chance.
Move Speed and Range are a Blessing, not a Curse
Neglecting speed and range is one of the most basic mistakes anyone can make when playing Brotato. This is basically a game about running around killing aliens, so why hinder yourself with limited speed and range. It’s like attaching a sharpened samurai sword onto a tortoise; yeah, it might get killed now and then, but when those enemies swarm, you’ll be saying cowabunga to your playthrough and restarting again. There are items in the game that grant bonus damage while you sacrifice movement speed, but as you progress, evading enemies will be the difference between life or death.
Heal’s the Deal
Food, Lumberjack Shirt and Trees help you heal yourself . Though it’s tempting to focus more on Life Steal or Health Regen, it is much more helpful to have access to heal in the battlefield in case you are swarmed or could not kill the enemies fast enough. Also, Trees can give you crates, which is much more helpful. You can stay alive more easily if you have these items, especially in the later levels.
Shop til you Don’t Drop!
The item shop in Brotato can sometimes be manipulated into giving you what you want for each run. For example, buying a weapon will drastically change the way the available weapons will pop up in the next wave. If you have certain item types you’re carrying on your current run, the chances of getting those same types in the shop as well as a chance for item class will exponentially increase over time.
That covers some beginner friendly tips in getting your Brotato to the next level. Hopefully these tips will help you dominate your run and cool like a cucumber – I mean potato. Do potatoes get cool? Anyway, that’s about it for the tips so sit keep runnin’, keep gunnin’, and keep killing them aliens!
